Masters Degrees: Hungary offers different program specializations and majors for Masters Degrees, ranging from both sciences and non-sciences majors.

The course length of a Master’s Degree in Hungary ranges from 1 to 2 years, depending on the major and the course program. However, a minimum of 30 credit hours is required as per the requirements of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). For one-year programs, a completion of 60 credit hours is required to complete the masters. While for two-year programs, an achievement of 120 credit hours is required to obtain the degree. For Sciences major, a completion of thesis is required to obtain the degree.

The academic year for Masters in the Hungary starts on September and ends on July and is divided over 2 semesters time.

Application for a Master’s degree in Hungary is required at least 3 months before the start date of the course in order to obtain the university acceptance letter, as well as the visa.

PhD Degrees: There are several PhD opportunities for students who wish to undertake their doctoral studies in Hungary. Like in most countries, the thesis topic of the research dissertation has to-be-approved by the university first prior to commencing of studies and relevant to the university’s interest. There would need to be an initial discussion between the student and the supervising professor to agree on the topic of research before undertaking the PhD studies. Some PhD programs would require practical studies; such as: Medicine, Engineering, etc., where students cannot rely on the academic or theoretical parts only. Therefore, for most PhD programs in Hungary, a minimum of 3-5 years of practical experience relevant to the research topic and field is required for undertaking a PhD. 

The mode of the classroom for a PhD in Hungary is flexible, where students would meet on a regular basis with their professors to discuss latest updates and obtain feedback regarding their research.The PhD in itself is quite a high-demanding program of study that requires a lot of continuous research combined with practical application and would hence requires a great amount of devotion and time for students who wish to commit to a PhD degree anywhere, and not only at Hungary.

The start date of a PhD program is unlike the rest of the programs in Hungary, it is usually arranged between the professor and the student.

Academic requirements for PhD programs in Hungary differ from one topic of research or field to the other.
